Describe an ambition that you haven’t achieved

You should say:

What it is
Why you haven’t achieved it
What you did

And how you felt about it.

Model Answer 1:

One of my ambitions that I have not yet achieved is to be able to communicate in Japanese.

I just got this idea a year ago because I realized that nowadays, knowing more foreign languages is an advantage not only in our daily lives but also in work environments.

In order to achieve this, I registered for a Japanese class for beginners, twice a week. I also downloaded an application named Duolingo on my iPhone which helps people study foreign languages, so that I can study on my own at home. For the first two months, I did not skip any classes, and spent at least 30 minutes every night studying Japanese on Duolingo at home.

Unfortunately, I could not keep up with the schedule for long since I was working full time, not to mention that I had many other social activities that distracted me from studying. There were days when I was so busy that I had to work overtime to finish my job. As a result, I wasn’t able to go to class and I definitely didn’t have any time to study at home. Moreover, my friends complained that I had been ignoring them, so I needed to arrange time to hang out with them. Just like that, I gradually lost my ambition to study Japanese and until now, I can only remember one alphabet table, even though Japanese uses three types of alphabets.

Highlight Vocabulary:

Not yet achieved: To not yet reach a goal or to succeed in doing something that you really want to do.

Model Answer 2:

Having ambition is significant because it can lead our lives towards the right trajectory. Although I have achieved umpteen ambitions in my life, one is still pending. The ambition is to open a restaurant. Since my childhood, I have been interested in cooking, and I always try to impress others through my culinary skills.

I have not achieved it due to many reasons. The first and foremost is capital investment. I need to have sufficient funds at my disposal to run a restaurant effectively. Being a student, I do not have money to rent a place. Moreover, success in any business thrives primarily on the experience we have. People who have heaps of experience find it easy to handle conflicts adroitly. On the other hand, for a novice like me, it is a daunting task to solve pressing problems in business.

Another roadblock is the ongoing corona pandemic. For the last two years, I have been seeing that the administration imposes a lockdown regularly. In such a scenario running a business is a cumbersome process. To achieve my ambition, I watched a boatload of videos on Youtube. Moreover, I have designed the website of my business.

I am pretty confident that very soon, I will start my business. For funds, I had a word with my uncle, he is ready to invest in my business by becoming a partner. Moreover, his tremendous experience would be an added advantage for me.

I will work hard with determination, dedication and discipline to lead my business towards an impressive growth trajectory.

Model Answer 3:

In a way, ambitions fuel up our lives and invigorate us to do our best in our respective lives. Although I have plenty of them, the primary purpose that I am working towards currently is to commence a startup and establish a business.

The seed of entrepreneurship sowed in my mind back in 2016. That was when I met a person on the internet who was an entrepreneur. His lifestyle and work culture fascinated me to a great extent. His hard work and the vision to bring a change in society was alluring to me. Thus, I decided to be an entrepreneur as well.

I am planning to achieve this ambition in the coming years. By the end of next year, I will probably launch my internet startup and commence serving my target audience.

So far, I have been on a learning spree. To be honest, I don’t want anything to go wrong with my startup because of a silly mistake. Therefore, I am taking many online courses, gaining knowledge by talking to like-minded people and sharpening my skills by being a part of seminars and online discussions.

Since I am working on developing my skills, I haven’t been able to accomplish this ambition yet. However, I am planning to execute the plans quite soon.

What kinds of ambitions do people have?

Well, it really depends, but for the most part, people tend to have a desire for success and happiness in life. To be more precise, a steady and well-paid job and an ideal family is always the thing that everyone strives for. Actually, whatever they dream of, it’s all about having a better life.

What ambitions do children usually have?

Children usually aspire to get good grades in their studies to become police officers/detectives, firefighters, and pilots in the future. Boys specifically express interest in becoming doctors, scientists, and veterinarians.

Is there any difference between children’s ambitions and those of grown-ups?

There is a huge difference between children and grown-ups when it comes to their ambitions. On the one hand, they often have grade-based goals, let’s say, they want to make improvements or reach a specific milestone in their education, or get high scores or achieve the first rank in their class. On the other hand, for adults, they could no longer put academic achievements as their top priority, instead they can have a variety of goals depending on their lifestyle, personalities and beliefs. For some, they want to pursue fame and fortune, they want to live a luxury lifestyle with a dream house, expensive cars, brand clothes, but for others, their goals are to live life to the fullest with travel, family relationship, or the freedom to follow their passions.

Why are some people very ambitious in their work?

According to my view, people are very ambitious when they are clear about their thoughts and want to achieve success. People who are enthusiastic, punctual and persistent towards their goals are very ambitious. Apart from this, being ambitious gives them immense happiness as they do a lot of hard work. Also, it gives them motivation and the energy to stay focused.

Why don’t some people have dreams?

Some people lack dreams because they feel content with who or what they are. They live in the present and generally don’t have any dreams for the future. I believe fear and laziness are the two factors that hold them back. People are so afraid of failing that they kill their will to try.

How do people balance work and life?

Maintaining a work/life balance is easy for some people because they understand how to better manage their time, when to detach from work and how to take care of themselves. I think a healthy lifestyle is quintessential to coping with stress and to achieving work-life equilibrium.
