Do you like to eat sweets?

I absolutely love them. In fact, I have a sweet tooth and I am a chocoholic, so whenever I can, I will just treat myself to a bar of chocolate. Not good for my health, I know, but I can’t help it.

Do you like eating cakes?

Yes definitely! I can say I really have a sweet tooth and cakes can make my day. Although I know that eating too much cake is not good for health because they have so much sugar that can lead to me being overweight, it is absolutely good for my mood. Eating a slice of cake after a meal is heaven on Earth!

Do you like sweets more or less now compared to when you were a child?

When I was little, my parents were so strict with me that they didn’t allow me to eat any sweets or cakes. They were worried that I would end up getting overweight. So maybe at that time, I had no interest in eating cakes or sweets.

What is your favourite kind of cake?

Nothing in particular – I can eat any kind of cake – well, as long as there isn’t any poison in it! I couldn’t understand why there are some people who are so picky when it comes to cake. For me all cakes are the same – they’re sweet.

Have you ever tried to make sweets?

Yes I have but to be honest with you, I don’t think I have a knack for baking or anything relating to cooking. There was a time I tried to bake a chocolate cake and I failed miserably.

When do you usually eat cakes?

Well, like most people do – on special occasions such as weddings, birthday parties, Christmas, and New Year. These are the times that I indulge myself eating cakes as they’re always served during those wonderful occasions. Sometimes I eat cake at home, which my mother made for me.

Why do people like sweets?

This is rather complicated and abstract I think. Simply put, I suppose people crave sugar for the sake of it. Or maybe a candy bar can actually provide us with energy to work and study more effectively.

Simply put: used for saying you are giving the basic facts about a situation

What desserts are popular in your country?

I think people in Vietnam really enjoy chocolate as they are cheap and easily available. Chocolate is also good for health as it releases endorphins.

IELTS SPEAKING PART 2

Describe a special cake you received from others.

You should say:

When it happened
Where it happened
Who you got the cake from

And explain why it’s a special cake

Sample Answer:

Being a big-time food fanatic, I love tasting mouth-watering delicacies. As far as desserts are concerned, I have a liking for cake. Although I have tasted cake numerous times, the one I had savoured during my last birthday was special, and I enjoyed that the most.

During my last birthday, the world was going through the second wave of the Corona pandemic. Due to that, my city was in a state of lockdown. There is no denying this conviction that a birthday party is incomplete without cake. So on my birthday, my friends baked a cake for me at our home.

As going out was not an option for us. So, my sister made the cake by using the ingredients available at home. First, she baked the bread, and for that, she used whole wheat flour. For the icing on the cake, she made whipped cream from milk. And, she further garnished the cake with choco chips and fruits.

I liked the cake because my friends baked it out of love and affection for me. Despite being newbies at cooking, they did tremendous hard work, and after watching umpteen videos on Youtube, they baked a mouth-watering cake for me.

As it was her first attempt, I was apprehensive regarding the taste of the cake. However, to my surprise, it was far beyond my expectation. And the smile my friends had on their faces after getting accolades from me would always remain etched in my memories.

In totality, that is the best cake I have ever tasted in my life.

Describe a special cake you had.

You should say:

What kind of cake it is
When you ate the cake
Who you ate with

And explain why you think the cake is special.

Sample Answer:

I would like to talk about a special occasion when a simple cake literally changed my miserable life. That was the time when I had just entered high school, which was 80km away from my hometown so I had to rent a flat and live alone near my school. Like many others, I was overwhelmed by the new environment and unable to adapt quickly. As a result, I was living in solitude for the first few months and had no close friendship with anyone.

But then an incident happened. I got sick, like, horribly sick. I couldn’t even walk for 50 metres, much less go to school. During that time, I was stubborn and stupid enough to believe that my condition would improve simply by waiting for my body to recover itself. As I was too weak to attend school, I asked my teacher to give me some days off. After 3 days lying in bed, my condition only seemed to be worse, since most of the time I was sleeping and didn’t eat anything.

But then, at around 3pm that day I received a call from one of my friends. She asked me about my condition and wanted to come over to check me out. When she came, I tried my best to walk downstairs to meet her, and I was surprised when I saw her holding a cake in her hand. It turned out that she knew I was in trouble so she made the cake herself and brought it to me in the hope of cheering me up. That simple act almost made me cry, and I ate the whole cake with heartfelt gratitude for my friend.

After that day my body healed up quickly, maybe it’s because I had finally put something into my stomach again. And of course, we became best friends after that moment. Now, even though we have taken different paths, we still keep in touch with each other and regularly share our stories and experiences. All in all, I am deeply thankful for having such friendship in my life, all starting with a cake.
