MỘT SỐ ĐỀ BÀI LIÊN QUAN ĐẾN CHỦ ĐỀ GENDER

Topic 1: In many countries, women join the army as men do. However, some people argue that the army solely needs males. What is your opinion?
Topic 2: Gender imbalance has long been a general phenomenon not only in the labor market but also in formal education. Some analysts argue that it is impossible to eliminate the underrepresentation of women in some subjects in the university. Do you agree or disagree?
Topic 3: Throughout history, male leaders often made society more violent and conflicting. If women governed the world, the world would be more peaceful. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Topic 4: Some people believe that women should play an equal role as men in a country’s police force or military force, while others think women are not suitable for these kinds of jobs. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Topic 5: In many schools and universities today, women have a tendency to study the humanities (such as the arts and languages) while men more often major in science-related subjects.What do you think are the reasons? Do you think that this tendency should be changed?

1. In many countries, women join the army as men do. However, some people argue that the army solely needs males. What is your opinion?

⇒ Sample Essay:

In recent years, gender imbalance in the armed forces has been a topic of debate in many parts of the world. While I am convinced that the majority of the army officers should be males, I believe women play imperative roles in protecting a country's territory.

On the one hand, females have the significant physical strength and outstanding resilience, which are preconditions to accomplish the army's heavy mission. Specifically, men's solely natural features support their specialized activities, including carrying guns and heavy weapons to fight back the enemy. If the armed forces are equipped with advanced technological equipment, they also need physical strength to accomplish their duties. In addition, the resilience to severe injuries makes male officers suitable to join the army. A man is not prone to a normal fever when the weather suddenly changes and can recover quickly after being injured. Conversely, females are believed not to be physically suited to the mission due to their tiny body sizes and uneven performances.

On the other hand, despite their disadvantages, female soldiers can serve the army through unarmed roles because non-combat activities contribute significantly to accomplishing the mission. Indeed, females are capable of taking over army medical officers and providing medical treatment to soldiers, who occasionally are injured and wounded. This role requires specialized knowledge rather than physical strength and can be fulfilled regardless of gender. Moreover, calmness and perseverance, which feature the weaker gender, are pivotal to accomplishing diplomatic tasks. Because female army officers tend to be less violent and conservative compared to females, they can rebalance critical strategic decisions.

In conclusion, the diversity of genders in the armed forces can support the army's heavy duties. Either males or females play essential parts in protecting their countries' sovereignty.

2. Universities should accept equal numbers of male and female students in every subject. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

⇒ Sample Essay:

In my opinion, men and women should have the same educational opportunities. However, I do not agree with the idea of accepting equal proportions of each gender in every university subject.

Having the same number of men and women on all degree courses is simply unrealistic. Student numbers on any course depend on the applications that the institution receives. If a university decided to fill courses with equal numbers of males and females, it would need enough applicants of each gender. In reality, many courses are more popular with one gender than the other, and it would not be practical to aim for equal proportions. For example, nursing courses tend to attract more female applicants, and it would be difficult to fill these courses if fifty per cent of the places needed to go to males.

Apart from the practical concerns expressed above, I also believe that it would be unfair to base admission to university courses on gender. Universities should continue to select the best candidates for each course according to their qualifications. In this way, both men and women have the same opportunities, and applicants know that they will be successful if they work hard to achieve good grades at school. If a female student is the best candidate for a place on a course, it is surely wrong to reject her in favour of a male student with lower grades or fewer qualifications.

In conclusion, the selection of university students should be based on merit, and it would be both impractical and unfair to change to a selection procedure based on gender.

3. Some people think women should be allowed to join the army, the navy and the air force just like men. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer.

Whether women should be allowed to serve in the military has triggered spirited debate. Some assert that women should be allowed to defend their country in the same capacity as their male peers. Personally, I agree with their assertion for two reasons.

History has shown that women are fully capable of performing well in the military. Historically, there were a host of valiant women soldiers whose achievements really put their male counterparts to shame. One need only look at the classic examples of Joan of Arc and Mulan to see how exceptionally women could perform on the battlefield. In my observation, their determination, courage and dignity, to this day, are still being admired by male soldiers and civilians alike throughout the world.

Moreover, from an enlightened standpoint, female patriots should be granted the right to go to the front line when their motherland is involved in a war. Admittedly, gender inequality was a highly controversial issue in the twentieth century. However, now twelve years into the new millennium, women can learn and teach, work and supervise, vote and voted in most countries just like men. In light of this sweeping progress in gender equality, there is no sense in denying them the right to defend their home country when a war breaks out.

In sum, keeping military services out of bounds of women in the information age is unwarranted. I have been convinced that it is in the best interest of a nation if women are also granted equal rights in this particular arena.
