A tailback: when vehicles have stopped or moved slowing in a line because of traffic problems on the road
Example: Yesterday there was a four-mile tailback on the main road into the city after a crash.
A pile-up: A traffic accident from many vehicles that hit each other
Example: Because of the thick fog, dozens of cars piled up on the freeway.
A tow-away: an act of officially removing cars from a place that parking is illegal
Example: I couldn't find a parking meter, so I decided to park illegally and risk a tow-away.
Congestion: there is too much traffic on the roads, and the movements are made difficult
Example: Congestion in the city centre has increased dramatically
A traffic-free zone: The specific area where cars (or motobikes perhaps) are not allowed to access.
Example: The centre of the city has been designated a traffic-free zone.
Speed limit – the fastest speed that you are allowed to drive on a road
Example: The speed limit on this highway is 65 miles per hour.
Jump the lights: to ignore a red traffic light and keep driving
Example: It's dangerous to jump the lights. You may have a terrible accident.
